What to do Before Your Massage

Look up directions to the office or studio before you leave.

Make sure you know where you’re going before you head to your appointment. Did the therapist provide any specific directions? Do you know where you are going to park? Rushing into your appointment right on time or a few minutes late is not the ideal way to start your session. You’re probably already stressed enough from everyday life and looking forward to some relaxation time - don’t make it harder on yourself by starting your appointment in a frazzled state.

Jot down the areas of concern you want to bring up to your massage therapist during intake.

We’ve all been in the situation where you’re leaving an appointment and you realize you forgot to bring up something that has been bothering you. Make a quick list in your Notes app so that you don’t forget anything! 5 minutes left in an upper-body focused session is not the time to bring up that you wanted some work on your knee, too.

Keep hygiene in mind.

While arriving freshly showered to your massage is definitely not necessary, please don’t come straight to your appointment from your workout or yardwork. Massage therapists often work in small rooms and the smell can linger throughout the day. Besides that, think about whether you really want dirt and oils rubbed back into your skin!
Speaking of personal care - shaving beforehand is NOT recommended. You may think you are doing your therapist a favor by shaving your back or chest before your appointment, but it’s actually the opposite - working over stubble can be quite uncomfortable, and the therapist may avoid using deep pressure in order to prevent causing tiny microtears in their skin.

Eat a small meal 2-3 hours beforehand.

Lying down for a prolonged period of time when you’re really full is not a comfortable feeling! Have a small meal 2-3 hours before your appointment with a little snack closer to the start time if you’re hungry. Also pack a small snack, like a granola bar or banana, to eat after your appointment as you will likely feel hungry afterward.

Use the restroom right before your appointment.

Like Mom says - even if you think you don’t have to go, just try. Nothing can take you out of the zone faster like the urge to go halfway through your massage.
