What is dynamic cupping?
The type of cupping I offer involves placing silicone cups over the body to create vacuum suction and decompress soft tissues. This helps bring stagnant fluid into circulation and loosen fascial restrictions. Cupping can be used to address muscle soreness and mobility issues.
Dynamic cupping refers to the use of movement to amplify the decompressive effects. “Internal glide” of myofascial tissues occurs when a cup is placed over a target area while the client slowly and actively performs movement. “External glide” is performed when cups are glided back and forth over a target area.
Cupping marks are different than bruises - this discoloration is due to stagnant blood and fluid being pulled closer to the surface of the body. The marks will fade over the course of anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of weeks.
Cupping does not have to leave marks! Marks typically occur when the cup is “parked” on an area for 3-5 minutes, but other methods involve constant movement of the cup. One of my favorite ways to use cups is to suction, lift, and glide around the scapula to help free up restrictions in the soft tissue.
Cupping should never be painful, but you may feel mild discomfort depending on your sensitivity. It can feel a little strange to experience the negative pressure of your tissues being pulled upward, but it should overall feel therapeutic and relaxing. I always check in with the client to make sure the level of suction is okay with them.
