How often should I get a massage?

After a first session, clients of course want to know when they should come back. There’s no one answer that applies to everyone, but I can give some examples of different types of clients I have and the frequency of their visits.

  • Someone comes in with a specific issue they want bodywork to help with. We’ll make some good progress in the first session and then continue the work over 2-3 more visits. If they can come once a week for a few weeks until the issue is resolved, that is fantastic. If they can only make it in every 2-3 weeks, that’s still okay!

  • A person with fibromyalgia comes in every 2 weeks for a 120 minute full body session to help help manage their pain with myofascial release and cupping.

  • A powerlifter comes in every 3-4 weeks to supplement their training and recovery.

  • A person with chronic pain from injury/surgery comes in every 4-6 weeks to maintain range of motion and pliability of scar tissue as well as decrease sensitivity of the injured area.

  • A runner comes in between peak week and their big race to decrease feelings of soreness and tightness in their legs.

I have lots of clients that come in once a month to help manage chronic pain and stress, aid in athletic recovery, and/or just enjoy bodywork because it feels good! A lucky few come in every two weeks. And of course, there are many clients that I’ve only seen once. Everyone has different resources and values bodywork differently. If massage is a once-a-year treat for you, there’s nothing wrong with that!

My specific recommendation for the frequency of YOUR visits will just depend on your needs, goals, and resources/schedule. I always block off time between sessions so that we have time to make a plan.
